On the Today program this morning there was a gentleman who corrected John Humphries when he was introduced as a solicitor and asked instead to be called a litigation executive. I was flummoxed.

Aaah - you mean like a Domestic Engineer (housewife) or a Sanitary Disposal Officer? (bin man). Hmmm.

*waves* Hello!! Erm, well I'm a Litigation Executive for one thing.

Basically I can't call myself a Solicitor as only qualified solicitor's can, it's a criminal offence under the Solicitor's Act to impersonate one.

I'm nearly qualified as a Legal Executive (one of the various forms of lawyers out there), but the title "Trainee Legal Executive" is very misleading when I've been doing this job for over 8 years! As my area is Litigation, Litigation Executive is the title I have. It's actually meaningless, but better than the alternatives.

Though when I qualify I will be able to call myself a Legal Executive (which again currently would be illegal for me to do) which does actually mean something.

That help?
